Lutron HomeWorks Lighting Control for Long Island, Hamptons and NYC Homes

Lighting control changes how a house feels more than almost any other system. As a Lutron dealer and programmer, we plan HomeWorks around your architecture, your fixtures and the way each room is used from morning to night.

01

Why whole-home lighting control matters

A large home can easily end up with banks of six, eight or ten switches beside a doorway, each controlling a single circuit, with no sensible way to set the room for dinner or turn the house off at night. Lutron HomeWorks replaces that clutter with a small number of engraved keypads that recall scenes: Welcome, Dinner, Relax, Clean, Off. Each scene sets many circuits to precise levels with a smooth fade, so rooms look the way the designer intended rather than the way the last person left them.

Control also protects the house. Lights that follow schedules and astronomical time make an empty home look lived in, exterior lighting comes on at dusk without a timer to reset, and a single button at the bedside can turn off everything on the property. For seasonal homes in the Hamptons, that peace of mind is often as valuable as the ambience.

02

Designing scenes around how rooms are used

We begin by walking through a day in the house. In a kitchen, morning light may need to be bright and cool at the counters, while evening calls for warm accent light at the island and cabinets. A living room may need a conversation scene, a reading scene and a movie scene. A primary suite benefits from a low path light that guides a night-time walk without waking anyone.

Keypad layouts are then designed to match. We keep button counts low, label buttons in plain words and place keypads where hands naturally reach. Engraving, finishes and faceplate styles are chosen with the interior designer, because a keypad sits at eye level in every room and should feel like part of the hardware package rather than an afterthought.

03

Fixtures, dimming and Ketra natural light

Control is only as good as the fixtures it drives. LED drivers vary widely in how smoothly they dim, and mismatched drivers are the most common cause of flicker or lights that pop on at a high level. We coordinate with the lighting designer and electrician on compatible fixtures and dimming methods so fades are smooth all the way down.

For rooms where light quality matters most, we often recommend Ketra, Lutron's tunable lighting platform. Ketra can shift color temperature through the day, warm toward candlelight at night and render art and finishes accurately. It is controlled through the same HomeWorks system, so it lives on the same keypads and scenes. You can see more of that approach on our lighting design page.

04

Shades, integration and a single system

HomeWorks controls Lutron shades natively, which means a single keypad button can set lights and shades together. Morning scenes can raise shades on the east side, afternoon automation can lower south-facing fabrics to protect floors and art, and evening scenes can close everything for privacy. Our motorized shades page covers fabric choices and pocket planning in more detail.

When a home also has Crestron automation, the two platforms are integrated so touch panels, phones and keypads always reflect the same status. Lighting can respond to a theater starting, an alarm being armed or a door station being answered. That integration is planned and programmed in-house, so there is one team responsible for how everything behaves together.

05

New construction, renovations and wireless retrofits

In new construction, we work from the electrical plan to assign circuits to control panels, identify keypad locations and size equipment enclosures. Centralized panels keep dimmers out of the walls and make service easier. On a ground-up Hamptons house or a large Nassau County renovation, this coordination happens alongside the electrician and lighting designer so circuits are wired correctly from the start.

Existing homes are often good candidates for wireless HomeWorks devices, which replace standard switches in existing boxes and communicate without new control wiring. That makes lighting control practical in Manhattan apartments with limited wiring paths and in older North Shore homes with plaster walls. Many projects combine both approaches, using panels in new areas and wireless dimmers where walls stay closed.

06

Considerations specific to New York homes

Long Island and Hamptons houses frequently have significant landscape lighting, pool lighting, and lighting for detached buildings, which raises questions about circuit capacity, weatherproof control and timing. We plan for exterior lighting scenes that work with the landscape designer's intent and change with the seasons. Manhattan homes bring different issues: shorter ceiling heights, co-op and condo alteration processes, and the need to keep equipment compact.

We follow the same design discipline for clients in Florida, though our New York projects tend to involve more seasonal scheduling and winter considerations. In every case, the outcome we aim for is a house where lighting simply looks right, at any hour, without anyone thinking about switches.

07

Programming, handoff and ongoing adjustments

Once fixtures and devices are installed, scenes are programmed and tuned in the finished space, ideally with the homeowner or designer present for a lighting walkthrough at night. Levels that look right on paper often need adjustment once furniture, art and finishes are in place. We set schedules, vacation modes and exterior timing, then train the household on keypads and the app.

Preferences evolve. A new painting, a rearranged room or a change in routine may call for a scene adjustment, and because the system is programmed by our team, those changes are straightforward. HomeWorks can be adjusted remotely in many cases, which saves a visit for small changes. If you are planning a home theater or theater-style media room, theater lighting is programmed on the same system for smooth, consistent fades.

08

Exterior and landscape lighting control

On Long Island and East End properties, exterior lighting is often as extensive as interior lighting. Driveway lights, facade washes, path lights, pool lighting and garden uplights can all run on HomeWorks so they follow the sunset, step down to a lower level late at night and switch off at a set hour. A single Away scene can leave a few exterior and interior lights on schedules that make the house look occupied.

We coordinate with the landscape lighting designer on transformers, circuit counts and how each group should be controlled. Keeping exterior circuits on the same platform as the interior means one app, one set of schedules and one team to call when a change is needed.

09

Planning keypad locations

Keypad placement deserves the same care as switch placement once did. We mark locations on plans, check them against millwork, art walls and door swings, and group controls so each entry has one clean station rather than scattered devices.
